At 2 pm the final was about to start. The memorysticks were written, the batteries loaded and the whole team was standing around the main field.
The game was moderated by Ingo Dahm, one of our Ph.D. students, and Benjamin Altmeyer, a diploma student from Berlin.
The game was very thrilling. Berlin shot an eary goal and took the lead. But we shortly caught up and took the lead so that the score at the end of the fist half was 2:1 for Microsoft Hellhounds!
In the second half the team from Berlin managed to shoot another goal, but our robots did not give up. At the end of the game we won 4:2 and finally are the champions of the German Open 2005!

Sunday: second semifinal |
In the second semifinal the "Aibo Team Humboldt" had to play against the "Darmstadt Dribbling Dackles" and the winner of this game will play against us in the final.
It was a nice game with many chances on both sides. The Robots from Berlin tried a new stategy: they grabbed the ball for a short time, and pushed it towards the goal past the goalie, and this action brought them the first goal. Darmstadt and Berlin alternated in attacking and both shoot another goal. At the end of the first half Berlin led by 2:1.
Just in the beginning of the second half the robots from berlin managed to move the ball far into the opponents' half. In the resulting fight between the striker, the defender and the goalie all robots got a little bit confused so that the ball finally was in the goal. At the end Berlin won by 3:1 and so it's our opponent for the final.
Sunday: semifinal |
The semifinal against the "Bremen Byters" started just in time at 9.30. After chances on both sides the Hellhounds quickly scored the first goal. Also the ball handling near the boundaries of the field was very successfull so that the ball was not out so often.
For the second goal our robots had some help from the opponent goalie. After our robots managed to put the ball near the oppenent goal the goalie from Bremen pushed the ball in the goal while trying to reach its usual defending position. Shortly after that Bremen failed a chance to tie up, and our robots managed to score another goal just before the end of the first half.
In the second half no more goals were scored, but all the robots were irritated by another ball which rolled into our field from the nearby field of the small-size league. After this ball was removed, the game could resume. At the end our robots won by 3:1 and so we will play in the final at 1 pm.

Saturday: quarterfinals and videos |
Early in the morning a small group of people went to the Heinz-Nixdorf Museums Forum to watch the games of the looser-group while the other people were still sleeping in the hotel. Special thanks go to Markus and Michael who had to referee the first game on this day.
Team Chaos had no chance at all against SPQR and the Dutch Aibo Team. So SPQR and the Dutch Aibo-Team also reached the quarterfinals.

Shortly after noon the quarterfinals started with a game between "Aibo Team Humboldt" and "Hamburg Dog Bots" which ended with a victory for Berlin by 4:0.
Next was our game against "Les 3 Mousquetaires" from France. After a slow start our robots dominated the game. The first half ended 5:0 and our robots also managed to score 4 more goals in the second half. So the game ended 9:0 for the Microsoft Hellhounds.
In the other quarterfinals, Bremen and Darmstadt won against "SPQR" and the "Dutch Aibo Team". So only German-Team members reached the semifinals.
In the afternoon, four teams took part in the unofficial "Variable Lighting Challenge". The hamburg dog bots won this challenge by scoring 2 goals. We also scored 2 goals but using a few seconds more for this. So we only reached the second place here.
In the other challenge ("almost SLAM"), Carsten presented our research on localization without goals and landmarks.
At the evening all participants of the german open took part in the social event, where beer, pasta and salads were available in spades! Tomorrow at 9.30 we'll have the semifinal game against the Bremen Byters. Hopefully we'll get some sleep before.

Thursday: The first day |
Well rested we drove from the hotel to the HNF where some of the missing team members were already waiting for us. Quickly the rest of them arrived too, so that all our 20 team members are in Paderborn now.
Wednesday : Going to the German Open |
![]() |
Early in the morning (at 10 am, we are computer scientists :-) ) 6 of us gathered at the university to pack the field and all the other needed stuff into three cars and drove to the Heinz-Nixdorf Museums Forum in Paderborn where the competitions take place.
As we arrived, we first took a look around and built up the two playing fields. This year the main field, where all the games will take place, is located in the center auditorium where most of the audience will be.
But unfortunately, the team area with the testing field is on the third floor. So we'll have to go up and down very often. In the team area we only had two tables and eight chairs, so we had to talk to the organizing comittee to get more furniture for out team.
After that we drove to the hotel to relax before the beginning of the competitions.
